NC LiteracyCorps Member Service Description- Full Time

Reports to: Program Manager

Position Summary- The NC LiteracyCorps Member is responsible for providing one on one tutoring services to adults 18 years or older to learn to speak, understand, read and write English to meet self-identified goals. Member is also responsible for overseeing open math and computer labs and develop math and technology skills with students as needed. Member may also be responsible for facilitating Bank On Wayne Financial Education classes and other Literacy Connections services at identified sites in the community. The Member will work with Literacy Connections staff to recruit students and volunteers and will represent Literacy Connections at local outreach events.

Description of Duties:

Tutor/ Teaching

• Tutor low literacy LCWC adult learners as assigned, individually and in small groups.
• Assist Program Manager in providing tutor support in developing lesson plans, identifying appropriate materials and developing effective teaching strategies.
• Assist in Tutor and Student recruitment
• Facilitate Literacy Connections and Bank On Wayne services off-site at identified locations as assigned by the Program Manager.

Community Awareness

• Maintain documents and archival history of community awareness, service and education programs.
• Pursue tv, radio and print media coverage of program services, volunteer opportunities, and information for prospective tutors and students.
• Plan and implement national identity day observations

Qualifications:

• A commitment to providing educational opportunities to learners from diverse backgrounds.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the with the ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, students and community members
• Outstanding written and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• A creative and strategic problem solver with excellent organizational skills and ability to track deadlines
• Available to work evenings and occasional weekends
• Available to travel to Chapel Hill, NC for required NC LiteracyCorps trainings
• Ability to work off-site and provide own transportation

Required Training:

• Member must attend two-hour tutor orientation
• Member must complete eight hour Bank On Wayne program
• Member must attend four hour curriculum training

Members also receive a broad range of free training on the following:

program management,
volunteer recruitment,
literacy tutoring for K-12 students
diversity
leadership skills
networking

Additionally, Members plan and participate in service projects as part of AmeriCorps National Identity Days, as well as SCALE events, including:

Day of Service based on Make a Difference Day
Read.Write.Act. Virtual Conference
Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
National Literacy Action Week
AmeriCorps Week

AmeriCorps Full-Time Members will provide 1700 hours of service with a 12 month commitment, while receiving a living allowance of up to$13,732, and upon successful completion of the 1,700 hours and other AmeriCorps requirements, would be eligible to receive an educational award of $5,920.
