Full time members will work within their communities to address community needs that will range from volunteer recruitment, tutoring and other areas specified by the director and host site.

Book Harvest is a nonprofit organization based in Durham, North Carolina, whose mission is to provide books to
children who need them and engages families and communities to promote children’s lifelong literacy and academic
success. Since 2011, children have harvested more than 900,000 books from Book Harvest programs, building home

Position Description:

Book Harvest’s full-time North Carolina LiteracyCorps member will support the operations of our Community Book
Bank (CBB), which is one of our four core programs, distributing about 2,000 books per week year round to children in
the Triangle. The corps member will also help with strategic planning and growth of this program, focusing on
developing a relationship with Durham Housing Authority, with local laundromats, and with the families who live in
respective local communities. Serving as one of the logistical coordinators for our annual Dream Big Book Drive,
providing daily office coverage, maintaining databases and spreadsheets of books coming in and going out, generating
monthly reports, coordinating teams of community volunteers, hosting our monthly volunteer orientation,
representing Book Harvest at community events, and providing direct service to youth and families in communitybased
settings are among the general areas of responsibilities for our NCLC member.

Qualifications
The successful candidate for this position is a highly motivated, superbly organized individual who communicates
clearly, collaborates well, leads with professionalism, and is a team player. Attention to detail, ability to work
independently, and meticulous tracking of information are essential. This person must be able to represent Book
Harvest in a variety of settings and be an excellent communicator. An innovative approach to challenges, an
enthusiasm for teamwork, patience, perseverance, and a mindset of gratitude, respect, and possibility are a must. This
candidate must be available to work most Saturdays and some evenings.

Requirements
(NOTE: Additional Requirements are made by Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education (SCALE))
• High school diploma or GED (or promise to obtain one before using the education award from NCLC)
• At least 17-years-old
• U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Legal Permanent Resident
• Reliable transportation
• 12 month commitment to this position and completion of 1,700 hours of service by July 31, 2019.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Effective electronic communication and database management skills.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines with ease.
• A personal expectation of high quality in all tasks performed.
• Warm and engaging interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work Saturdays and some evenings.
• Ability to speak Spanish, strongly preferred.

Additional Benefits
