Mission and Goals for the specific project on which City Service Corps member is serving:
The New York City Young Men’s Initiative (YMI) is the nation’s most comprehensive municipal effort to tackle the disparities that impede the advancement of boys and young men of color (BYMOC). YMI was founded to improve outcomes by increasing avenues of opportunity and removing policy barriers for BYMOC.
YMI’s work has been mirrored by the White House’s launch of the national initiative My Brother's Keeper (MBK). MBK identified six targeted areas promoting BYMOC advancement: entering school ready to learn; reading at grade level by third grade; graduating from high school ready for college and career; completing postsecondary education or training; successfully entering the workforce and reducing violence and providing a second chance. Three goals within My Brother’s Keeper will provide the focal points for four new City programs under the Young Men’s Initiative, including one focused on tutoring for K-2 age youth. The new programs will primarily target six priority New York City Communities — South Bronx; East Harlem, Manhattan; Brownsville, Brooklyn; East New York, Brooklyn; Jamaica, Queens; and North Shore, Staten Island. As part of this focus, YMI will concentrate new programming on developing local capacity and aligning existing services.
Member Position Summary:
The Read More Corps is an initiative with an emphasis serving the underserved communities of New York City specifically helping young students grades K-2 improve, their reading ability through direct
service in tutoring and reading programming. Members will engage in a range of activities, including working in high-needs NYC Department of Education elementary schools to deliver one-on-one tutoring.
Detailed Functions of Position:
All Members will be trained and receive ongoing coaching to support their development as tutors.
1. Engage in one-on-one tutoring serving small caseloads of K-2 age youth using an evidence based tutoring methodology
2. Work closely with school’s Program Coordinator to identify students for enrollment, track student progress and create individual reading plans for students
3. Maintain daily logs, collect and input data as necessary
4. Participate in initial professional development and monthly training to increase pedagogicalskills and knowledge related to literacy
5. Work in partnership with host sites to design and implement capacity building activities to
expand provision of tutoring and reading programming, and organize and lead community events to increase community educate the community on literary resources
6. Build strong relationships with school staff members and families
Preferred Academic or Experience Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities of Member:
• Interest in learning about tutoring strategies and best practices in literacy
• Willingness to work with struggling students in high needs schools
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work well with diverse populations
• Self-directed, able to work independently and as part of a team
• Bilingual (Spanish) preferred
• Candidates interested in joining the education profession preferred
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• High school degree or high school equivalency degree (i.e., GED) minimum
• Must meet AmeriCorps member requirement for tutoring programs: 45 CFR §2522.910-.940
