Description
Mission and Goals for the specific project on which City Service Corps member is serving:
The City Service Corps member will support the Race to Justice initiative housed in the Center for Health Equity. Race to Justice is the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s internal reform process for advancing racial equity and social justice. It aims to promote justice and build capacity within the agency to improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers by:
Building staff awareness of how racism and other systems of oppression operate within institutions, and building skills to address how these systems shape health inequities
Examining how structural racism and other systems of oppression impact the Health Department’s work, decisions, interactions and priorities, and implementing policies andpractices to mitigate these impacts
Strengthening collaborations with New York City’s communities to counter racism and other oppressive systems, with the knowledge that institutions, including the Health Department, arenot separate and immune from these systemic injustices
As the City’s Health Department, we have made a commitment to protect and promote the health of all New Yorkers. However, not all New Yorkers have the resources and opportunities they need to attain optimal health. This is unfair and unjust. We cannot fully live up to the commitment to our work and our city without first taking a stand against injustice. Race to Justice aims to develop and align the tools, policies, practices and work environment staff need to take that stand and be more effective in improving health outcomes and reducing health inequities. The reform effort focuses on the following key areas:
Communications and Organizational Identity
Community Engagement and Partnerships
Workforce Equity and Development
Equitable Finance Practices
