Organizational Background: Founded in 1971, Y.O.U. is an Evanston-based non-profit that partners with families, schools, and the community to provide academic, social, and emotional support to close the opportunity gap and prepare all youth for post-secondary and life success. Each year, Y.O.U. provides over 1,600 youth across 11 school sites with free, holistic, out-of-school support, including afterschool and summer learning programs, mental health counseling, and experiential learning through partnerships. The organization is implementing a new strategic plan focused on data & evaluation of impact, increased integration of services, and refining the program model. Make a Difference in the Lives of Youth: Y.O.U.th Serve Members will support youth by serving as youth workers and leaders in Y.O.U.'s afterschool programs. Y.O.U.th Serve Members will provide youth with crucial academic support and help lead workshops on social and emotional enrichment and life skills. Y.O.U.th Serve Members will also assist the program in building relationships with families, community members and school administration. All Y.O.U.th Serve Members will report to an After School Program Manager.
The Y.O.U.th Serve Members will:
Direct Service (70%)
-Implement and facilitate a variety of enrichment activities on a daily basis including but not limited to social justice, anti- racist, cultural, artistic, physical fitness, STEM, adolescent identity and self exploration, and other academic enrichment activities on a daily basis.
-Collaborate with the out-of-school time team to design, develop, implement and differentiate curriculum for elementary or middle school aged youth.
-Integrate and adapt educational best practices and curriculum during programs.
-Deliver small group instruction and homework help in a safe and structured environment including but not limited to one on one academic support for students.
-Incorporate feedback from Y.O.U. out-of-school time leadership and school district administrators.
-Create and set classroom management expectations and agreements.
-Engage youth in meaningful service learning projects.
-Cultivate positive relationships with youth that support their success and well-being in and out of school time.
-Build healthy positive relationships with each other, with adults, and with their families.
-Assist in planning, coordinating, and hosting periodic family nights.
-Assist in planning, coordinating and transporting youth on field trips.
-Coordinate and implement Y.O.U. summer learning camps.
-Apply knowledge and skills learned during out-of-school time training in direct service activities.
Administrative Work (in support of Direct Service) (20%)
-Assist with monthly program attendance input and reporting.
-Create monthly newsletters and calendars to send out to program families.
-Attend weekly site-based team meetings, bi-weekly grade level team meetings and monthly direct service team meetings.
-Complete assessments as needed in support of OST data and evaluation efforts.
-Assist with daily snack prep for the program.
-Inventory and supply shop for educational program supplies on an on-going basis.
Training & Other (10%)
-Attend all AmeriCorps cohort meetings and training as scheduled.
-Attend all in-house OST department professional development training.
-Work with the After School Program Manager to align individual goals with OST department goals.
-Strategize and collaborate with After School Program Managers to identify and attend external training opportunities. --------Implement knowledge and skills learned into OST curriculum and program.
-Opportunity to carry a pager as assigned and be available to respond to crisis housing service requests in a timely manner in rotation with other staff and outside of direct service hours.
Develop crucial career and life skills: The Y.O.U.th Serve Member term of service offers a unique opportunity for growth for individuals thinking about a career in youth development, education or social work. Members will develop their leadership skills and enhance their understanding of youth development and support in a non-profit environment. At Y.O.U., we recognize the importance of professional development for our Members. Members will have access to internal training throughout the service year as well as access to funding for external training.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least 17 years of age
A high school graduate or GED recipient
A US citizen or permanent resident
Valid driver's license or willingness to obtain one
Preferred Qualifications:
Associates degree in education, human development, family studies, sociology, or other related field.
Previous experience working with elementary, middle or high school aged youth.
Interest, experience and commitment in pursuing a career in education, social services or other youth facing services.
Strong connection to Y.O.U. mission and values.
Ability to provide asset based learning in youth centered programming.
Creative and innovative facilitation skills.
Strong social-emotional intelligence, teamwork, leadership, and technological skills.
Strong interpersonal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to interact with individuals from a wide range of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
Understanding of race, privilege, power and other systems of oppression that impacts youth, communities and school systems. Ability to use this knowledge to provide culturally responsive programming.
Bilingual, preferably Spanish, Arabic or Urdu.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible service position appointed on an annual basis. The AmeriCorps Y.O.U.th Serve Benefits package including but not limited to vacation and sick time, and health insurance. All service members will have access to a $700 professional development fund that can be applied to any external training experiences. AmeriCorps Y.O.U.th Serve members receive a living allowance of $25,000 and an education award totaling $6,345 upon successful completion of the service term. There will be no relocation costs included in this package. Applicants should have a current, valid legal authorization to work in the United States.
