North Carolina Campus Compact is a collaborative network of colleges and universities committed to educating students for civic and social responsibility, partnering with communities for positive change, and strengthening democracy. The NC Campus Compact state office fosters connections between campuses, shares best practice information and resources, recognizes outstanding work, and champions civic and community engagement in higher education.

Presidents and chancellors from more than 50 public, private and community colleges and universities have joined our state Compact since we were founded in 2002 at Elon University. Our member schools are also part of national Campus Compact, which includes more than 1,000 college and university presidents representing 6 million students across the country.

  • About Us
We provide information, resources and professional development opportunities to help administrators, faculty, and students build an “engaged campus” -- where student learning is connected to community life. Primary programs include: meetings & conferences for faculty, staff, students, and higher education leaders; online, peer-reviewed journal; various mini-grants programs to support service and engagement at member campuses; AmeriCorps VISTA program; Campus Election Engagement Project; information and resource sharing through newsletters and other media; statewide awards program.

Our office is generously hosted by Elon University, but we do not receive any tuition dollars. Our work is supported by membership dues, conference fees, grants, and sponsorships. Technically, we are a "sponsored program" of the university, operating under its tax ID and non-profit status.
  • Our Impact
    UNITING CAMPUSES
We convene faculty, administrators, and national experts to share research, model programs, and best practices related to civic and community engagement. Each year, more than 500 professionals participate in our PACE Conference, Civic Engagement Institute, and other trainings. Our online, peer-reviewed journal Partnerships presents new ideas and research on community engagement to over 1500 subscribers. During the annual Presidents Forum, chancellors and presidents explore new strategies and issues related to leading an engaged campus.

    EMPOWERING STUDENTS
The Impact and Trailblazer awards recognize students for outstanding service and leadership on campus and in the community. Our annual CSNAP student conference brings 200 student leaders together to learn and serve. We also coordinate a non-partisan initiative to register, educate, and mobilize student voters.

    IMPACTING COMMUNITIES
Over the years, we have distributed nearly $2.5 million in grant funds and educational awards to campuses and students. The Compact’s AmeriCorps VISTA program builds capacity of campuses and non-profits to deliver programs and services that fight poverty. Since 2003, over 230 young people have completed VISTA service through our program, mobilizing 225,000 volunteers to participate in service that connects higher education institutions and communities.
