Description
Students are eligible for Student Support Services (SSS) Program services if they have an academic need, meet one of three eligibility requirements (first generation, low-income and/or have a documented disability) and have the ability to benefit from SSS services. In the 2013-2014 academic year over 68% of First Time In College (FTIC) Montana State University Billings (MSUB) freshman students met one or more of these criteria. In addition, there are currently 133 Veterans enrolled at MSUB, yet only 20 are currently a part of SSS. It is anticipated that approximately 75% of Veterans at MSUB are SSS-eligible. The vision of Montana State University Billings Student Support Services TRIO is to provide holistic and student-centered services, resources and educational opportunities that support and improve graduation for eligible students (low income, first generation, and/or disabled). The VISTA will help expand the current mentoring program (including a comprehensive evaluation tool), create internship opportunities for upper-level college students, design and fundraise for family engagement programs (for current and future students), and work on a retention plan to help participating students graduate college and build a pathway out of poverty.
Member Duties:
Evaluate the current mentor program and complete a SWOT analysis with the director; Create a formal internship program (SSS does provide internships at times, but there is not a formal relationship with departments on campus); Work with the following departments on campus to create a system for recruiting interns each semester; Update the mentor training manual and mentor training schedule; Train all staff on the updated mentor information; Help market and recruit current low income MSBU students (civilian students and Veterans) for the SSS program; Create a fundraising plan, solicit and track funds with the Program Coordinator for family engagement programs and graduation regalia. Help create and execute the family engagement programs.
