Growing up in an English-speaking world with Spanish-speaking parents was not easy. My parents worked long hours and had no time to learn the language. Two years ago, I graduated with an English degree. It was not until I graduated, that I realized how symbolic obtaining an English degree really was. I watched as my family cheered me on through a graduation ceremony they could not understand. This is why I want to serve; because I want to reassure families like mine that their sacrifices will pay off. I wish I had someone to guide me when I was younger, who could relate to the unique struggles I faced.
