Our AmeriCorps members tutor struggling readers in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. Our vision is that every child in Central Texas is a successful reader before third grade, setting them on a path of excellence in school and in life. Contact our recruiter, Cristina Flores, for more information on becoming a Literacy First Tutor!

About Literacy First

More than any other resource, literacy can change the trajectory of a child’s life. Be someone’s hero. Teach a child to read.

Literacy First is a high quality, comprehensive, research based, English and Spanish literacy tutoring program that supports students, families in the Austin community. Our mission is to provide low-income schools with highly trained AmeriCorps tutors to ensure that children advance to grade level in reading before third grade. Literacy First members tutor kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students one-on-one daily. The children we work with typically arrive at school without the background and skills that are critical for learning to read, and are likely to fall behind without additional support.

Literacy First’s Impact

During the 2015-16 school year, 106 AmeriCorps Members tutored over 2,200 students at 32 campuses across the Austin area. 75% of students in our program either fully reached or made measurable progress toward reading at grade level.

Literacy First AmeriCorps Members impacted the Austin community by serving over 144,000 hours tutoring and working with their school communities. Members also served over 9,000 hours working with community nonprofit partners, supporting our community of need.
