  • A challenge I’ve faced in my service year is…

Today I completed my first Linkedin Learning course on "Leading with Emotional Intelligence". I chose this topic because as my service year is moving past the half-way mark, I am attempting to reflect on my areas of growth as a leader.

I found the video, taught by Britt Andreatta, to be insightful and engaging. I admit I wasn't sure what to expect with these online courses, but they are so well done and comprehensive I am incredibly impressed. My total session was almost two hours and included five quizzes to assess my comprehension throughout the units. Here are some key take aways:

    1) Emotional Quotient is a term used throughout which can be defined as the level of a person's emotional intelligence. This is a crucial thing to cultivate within ourselves as well as to promote and develop in others, specifically in the workplace.

    2) There are three things to be aware of when improving your emotional intelligence: Be able to accurately identify your emotions and allow yourself to feel them, express gratitude, and allow yourself time to play.

    3) Change is any structural shift that occurs and it is factual and unemotional. Transitions are the psychological process that involves the human thoughts and feelings that accompany change. Sustainability is taking care of yourself so that you can meet and respond to challenges over time. Resilience is your ability to recover quickly fro adversity.

I definitely intend to bring what I learned from this course to my work as a Team Leader for City Year and continue to grow my emotional intelligence and that of my teammates.

Getting to be a part of Service Year 100! Through this program I was exposed to the amazing new feature on Airbnb called Social Impact Experiences. I chose to take a poetry writing class that was at Langston Hughes' house! We got a tour and the workshop was just so educational and engaging.

My friend and I were greeted so warmly by Kendolyn when we arrived and the home is absolutely beautiful and the history and integrity is so thoughtfully preserved. We had a great tour and even got to see the office where Langston wrote! Then we had an amazing poetry writing seminar with poet Trace DePass.

I can't say enough how wonderful and insightful the whole experience was. I don't write poetry but I admire it immensely, and this seminar was really educational and accessible to anyone. My friend who attended does write poetry and Trace did an amazing job tailoring his lesson to both of our skill levels. I highly recommend it! We were also invited to stay for their monthly open mic night, where we saw some New York spoken word poets perform. I was so inspired by the whole experience I have decided to get involved with the arts community in Harlem and other parts of the city. I can't express how grateful I am that Airbnb and Service Year provided me with this opportunity.

getting to know people from all walks of life. When I started my corps year with City Year Miami, I drove down with just a car full of some possessions all the way from Boston, MA! As I got to Florida, I found out my housing had fell through and was promptly freaking out. Thankfully, I was a recipient of the Airbnb relocation housing voucher and used it until I found my awesome apartment in Little Haiti! Needless to say, it wasn't the most ideal circumstances to be introduced to a new city; but I had a great time getting to know my host and his adorable little dog and cat. I felt so welcome and at ease that the anxiety of uncertainty faded away and was replaced by the beauty of Miami and the people that inhabit it. I will always treasure my time there and I owe a lot of that to being able to stay in an Airbnb at the start of my journey. Thank you Service Year and Airbnb for helping me get to know someone new! #ServiceYear100
