Description

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. GEAR UP New Hampshire seeks to improve the high school graduation rates, college going rates and first year retention rates of students from three of the most resourced challenged regions of the state, including the Lakes Region. Some of the activities the VISTA will do are: create a peer-to-near-peer mentoring program, organize a region-wide FAFSA completion day, and work with school administrators and counselors to develop a way to teach students, especially those that will be first-generation students, social and communication skills for college—such as self-advocacy, self-awareness, persistence, and self-discipline to persist in the face of obstacles. Through everything, the VISTA will promote the message that “College is Possible”.
