Description

The City of New Orleans VISTA program is implemented by the Office of Mayor LaToya Cantrell and New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS). The City is seeking passionate individuals to build capacity to break the cycle of poverty and empower our community.

New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS) is the sole 911 provider response agency in Orleans Parish. In addition to responding to 911 CFS, NOEMS has over 150 volunteers who assist with special initiatives of the office. These initiatives include providing bystander response training, car seat safety training, and emergency preparedness information to residents. The VISTA project will expand and enrich the community outreach and engagement for these initiatives and strengthen the capacity of our volunteer corps to reach more residents. The New Orleans EMS VISTA will work to address and lessen poverty by supporting some of the city’s most vulnerable residents through NOEMS community outreach initiatives by increasing community awareness and volunteer capacity.

The VISTA will have two objectives: 1) develop effective, inclusive, and innovative outreach and engagement initiatives that increase awareness of NOEMS programs and support vulnerable communities, and 2) implement project initiatives towards the continued development and coordination of the EMS volunteer corps. The project will develop an outreach and communications strategy and build out a volunteer corps to support and expand operations for many years to come. This position is a unique opportunity to help the local community and get an inside look at a robust emergency services program. You will gain experience in communications, project management, and volunteer coordination among other skills. You will also learn bystander response, build relationships, engage with diverse communities, and have the opportunity to network with community partners in Orleans parish.

Throughout one year of service, the VISTA member will work with NOEMS to develop and increase the scope and sustainability of the program. The VISTA will build relationships with key stakeholders and empower vulnerable communities to take part in initiatives like the bystander response courses and car seat safety trainings. The member will do this by developing a public relations and outreach strategy for culturally diverse populations. This will also include creating communications materials, both physical and digital, to be used for education and outreach. To expand the scale and reach of NOEMS initiatives, the member will develop and coordinate the volunteer corps through outreach and recruitment. The member will also create volunteer management tools and trainings.
