Description
The City of New Orleans VISTA program is implemented by the Office of Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the Office of Youth and Families. The City is seeking passionate individuals to build capacity to break the cycle of poverty and empower our community. New Orleans is a welcoming city with a unique culture, plentiful natural spaces, and a reputation for hospitable and friendly residents.
The Office of Youth and Families (OYF) works to improve child well-being by increasing coordination between agencies, expanding resources, ensuring equitable policymaking, and engaging youth and community input. OYF serves as the link between the Mayor's Office, the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC), the New Orleans Public Library (NOPL), the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center (JJIC) and New Orleans Public Schools (NOLAPS).
The VISTA Service Year is dedicated to building capacity for the OYF Pathways Program, a 15-week work readiness program for system-involved youth with the goal of empowering them to succeed. The program operates year-round and seeks to mitigate youth poverty, unemployment, and recidivism by providing youth with paid work internships, personal development workshops and case management to encourage a successful transition to the workforce. By joining the Office of Youth and Families the VISTA member will gain a thorough understanding of program and project management, communications, youth programming, and city government. The VISTA project will have a meaningful impact on the youth in New Orleans.
Throughout one year of service, the VISTA member will work with the Office of Youth and Families to build the capacity of the Pathways Program to better serve system-involved youth in the City of New Orleans. The VISTA member will improve and create communications and project management tools to more effectively reach community members and program participants. The member will cultivate greater financial capacity for the program by researching and applying for new grant opportunities to match with appropriate programs and services within the department. The VISTA will also grow and develop community partnerships and increase engagement with residents and partners by conducting outreach and coordinating logistics with youth service providers.
