Through the #SY100, I was given the challenge to grab coffee with someone I wanted to get to know better. As a coffee hater, I opted for iced tea but the challenge itself proved fruitful. I decided to meet up with one of my #SY100 peers and Reading Partners colleagues, Alexis. Since we are in different regions and portfolios at work, we don't often get the chance to interact outside of the limited number of full-staff professional development days. I always thought we would have a lot in common because we both spend probably way too much time baking decadent desserts. We went to the Union Square Starbucks and were lucky enough to have one of the first truly nice days of the season to enjoy. It was cool hearing about her experience doing my same job at a different school. She's a super organized person, and so I was definitely taking notes when she shared her insanely detailed schedule for all our end of year tasks. I gained some good insight and a different perspective on general goings on within our organization, in addition to just having a nice time enjoying the weather and company! I'm grateful that our work and this challenge gave us the opportunity to connect and get to know each other!

  • I want to learn more about...

Effective communication is a key skill to succeed in any job, and it is especially important to communicate well in my position with Reading Partners. Each day, I need to communicate with tutors, teachers, children, and my own peers, and make sure that in doing so I am representing my organization well. While I think I can be very personable, I think this is something I can continue to work on.
Through #SY100, I took a LinkedIn learning class on Communicating with Confidence with Jeff Ansell. A series of videos highlighted tricks, tips, and best practices in communication. I really enjoyed going through the class and felt I learned a lot. One thing Jeff highlighted was how often many of us have "Racing Brain Syndrome," which is to say our brain is working way to fast and we aren't keeping focused and in the moment/present with who we're talking to. He offered a lot of great advice and I enjoyed going through the class! I am currently practicing some of his excellent breathing techniques.

As a member of Service Year 100, I had the opportunity to participate in an Airbnb Social Impact experience in my service city of NYC. I chose to attend an experience at the Mama Foundation for the Arts in Harlem. I've lived in the city for almost five years and while I babysat a lot in Harlem, I've never explored it as much as I would've liked. The Mama Foundation experience offered a chance to learn about gospel music in the area and at the organization from the founder and local legend, Vy, and then participate in a masterclass musical experience with the adult choir. As a former choir singer back in high school, I was really excited to participate. I was not disappointed- Vy was so welcoming, engaging, and highly informed on the musical history of the area and the experience singing with the choir was certainly a highlight. All of the music is taught by rote without the aid of sheet music and the director had such a strong understanding of music and was able to convey his mission with such clarity, that us musical amateurs could pick up on it. I left feeling uplifted and have now had the songs we learned stuck in my head for the whole week!
