While interning in the NYC Service unit of the Office of the Mayor of New York in Fall 2016, I was introduced to the concept of a Service Year. Nearly everyone in the office had participated in one and they relayed to me that their year of service was a defining point in their careers and a vital step in their own personal growth. As a senior in college getting ready to enter the real world, I had four years of classes and internships but I still could not tell you exactly what I wanted to do beyond "help people." Participating in a service year will give me the experience needed to better define my own career goals and aspirations while actively aiding my community through meaningful service. Service in any capacity is a positive and life-changing idea and I look forward to my year.
