In the summer of 2017, I spent 9 weeks working at a summer camp in a small town in rural Oklahoma where poverty was prevalent. This experience was extremely challenging but also rewarding. I worked with a group of about twenty, four and five year olds. Many of the children came from families where their parents had low levels of education and they often struggled financially. What I learned from this experience is that at such a young age, it can be difficult to tell children apart who come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. However, once the children grow older, that gap becomes more noticeable, as I observed in the older children in the summer program. Education is the key to bridging the gap between students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. If they are able to start out with a quality education and foundation at a young age, then these poorer children will have a better chance of being as successful as their wealthier classmates as they have all been given the tools to be able to succeed. This first hand experience is very valuable for me as I will likely be working with students with similar challenges to those my students in Oklahoma had. I want to make sure that all students have a quality education and this begins in early childhood.
