Gunnison Trail Crew Leader

The Western Colorado Conservation Corps Gunnison Trail Crew Leader Specialist (GTLCS) is a seasonal, AmeriCorps position responsible for assisting the WCCC with trail maintenance duties in and around Gunnison, Colorado. Crew Leader will lead along with an Assistant Crew Leader a crew of 3 youth, ages 17-25. The position also requires preparation time and post session clean up. Must hold members accountable, and not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the AmeriCorps Member service agreement. Projects will include hand tool use, evaluation of trail, tool and equipment maintenance. This position is located on a Forest Service unit performing a variety of duties in support of the unit’s wilderness program in the area of recreation, ecology, data collection, trails and fire. A GTCLS will work with WCCC staff, and Gunnison Forest Staff to help further WCCC’s overall mission. This five-person crew with project oversight provided by an experienced Wilderness Ranger will help to keep access open to these trails in and out of designated Wilderness (utilizing cross- cut saws). Activities will include clearing trees that have fallen across non-motorized trails and trail maintenance. These actions will help mitigate impacts to resources off trail and provide a better experience to the public we serve. This work will create resilient landscapes while connecting our community to our public lands. It will also foster a healthy work environment while providing the trail crew members to explore new career opportunities.
