Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, San Jose is one of the most vibrant, diverse, and innovative regions in the world.  We have set a bold vision - to become a beacon for community service - where young adults have opportunities to create a positive impact across our community through a service year that matches their skills and passion, with a paid opportunity to develop real-world skills through hands-on service.  Service years can be a powerful pathway for youth to gain skills, improve their community, and advance their careers.  Supporting service years isn’t just good… it’s good business, and makes good sense. Empowering young adults to be the solution through a Service Year

Americans from all sectors coming together behind a big idea: that a year of national service – a service year –should be a common opportunity, cultural expectation, and new civic rite of passage for young people growing up in America. In collaboration with community, corporate, Foundation and city-wide partners, we want to:  Recruit, place and support the deployment of 1,000 service year corps members throughout the City of San Jose, with a primary focus on education programs serving at-risk populations/communities, that would benefit from service year placements. Position our Service Year Program as a Key City Initiative to expand the capacity of current service-year programs; create service year opportunities where currently none exist; and seed new engagement programs for existing organizations and prospective entities (NPOs, city services, corporate programs, etc.) Impact 50,000 youth (1:50) throughout San Jose – changing the trajectory of service corps members and youth throughout the community touched by the service year program experience!

Why Service Matters?

We care deeply about the future of San Jose and, especially the impact civic engagement/volunteerism can have – particularly for the children of our city.  Like many urban centers across the country, San Jose utilizes volunteers to augment services that provide significant benefits to the City. Through citizen engagement and collaboration with nonprofit, public, and private partnerships, our goal is to create a movement that will make San Jose a safer and healthier community.  We have set a bold vision for the City of San Jose: to become a beacon for community service and set a new standard for community involvement in tackling the City’s toughest problems and promote service as a core feature of what it means to be a citizen in the most innovative City in the world.  This is your opportunity to gain vital professional and life skills that will propel you through your college and work career!  We want to make San Jose the country’s leader in providing stipended and volunteer service-year opportunities that harness the power of our young adults to create more dynamic communities and maximize social impact.
