Description
As a Serve VISTA, you’ll spend a year of service in a city department, where you’ll fight injustices and causes of poverty in Philadelphia. This program:
- Increases capacity for departments that serve low-income individuals and communities.
- Facilitates solutions that decrease the effects of poverty experienced by Philadelphians.
- Produces alumni who are civically engaged, passionate, and employable.
- Promotes best practices in community engagement and sustainable solutions.
While each VISTA position is unique to a department or initiative, all Serve Philadelphia VISTAs build capacity. Examples of capacity-building include:
- Creating tools, systems, and guides for a department. That might include databases, policy briefs, or marketing materials.
- Generating resources through partnerships, volunteers, or grant-writing.
- Developing, organizing and/or assessing programs, events, or meetings.
- Supporting, establishing, or strengthening partnerships across departments and sectors.
