The SCA New Hampshire AmeriCorps Program is a partnership between the Student Conservation Association, The New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development, and the Corporation for National and Community Service. Since 1994, SCA NH AmeriCorps has provided nearly one million hours of service to the lands and people of New Hampshire. Each year, 30 full time 18-25 year old volunteers contribute more than 50,000 service hours, providing environmental education programming to the state’s residents and visitors, and completing conservation service projects that improve and protect the state’s cultural, recreational, and natural resources.

From January through April, Conservation Steward Corps members teach environmental education to more than 1,000 fourth and fifth grade students in Manchester, Allenstown, and Hooksett School Districts. Collaborating in teaching teams of 2-3 to develop a 10-week curriculum and service learning project, members incorporate NH State Science Standards while fostering connections between the students and their natural world. The teaching teams also lead after school activities in Manchester 21st Century After School programs and the Salvation Army's Kids Cafe program. Upon completion of the education season, members enter into conservation season from April through October. Crews contribute to building new trails, maintaining existing trail networks, eradicating invasive plant species, restoring and preserving historical structures, and maintaining visitor facilities, such as pavilions and cabins. A typical field project or "hitch" will consist of collaborating as part of a 5-6-person crew for 11 days in the field.

Conservation Steward Corps members dedicate 10 months of their lives to serve in communities throughout New Hampshire while contributing as active community members in a residential program called the SCA NH AmeriCorps. Bear Brook State Park is the largest developed state park in New Hampshire, with over 10,000 acres of land. The home of New Hampshire Corps for nearly 20 years, Bear Brook gives corps members a variety of recreational opportunities as well as beautiful scenery to call home while participating in their 10-month service commitment.

During education season, Conservation Stewardship members primarily serve in Manchester, the largest and most diverse city in New Hampshire. Once conservation season begins, members get to see the full beauty of the Granite State in a variety of locations, including state parks and forests.

Service Activities

1. Attend and participate in all training.
2. Work as part of a crew to complete conservation projects around the state of New Hampshire.
3. Take on role of Crew Leader for at least one hitch, serving as a professional liaison with park managers, handling the logistics of a project, delegating responsibilities, developing emergency response plans, and completing all necessary paperwork.
4. Be an active and participatory team player.
5. Be an active and participatory member of the SCA New Hampshire AmeriCorps community.
6. Comply with all SCA, DRED, and AmeriCorps policies and refrain from any prohibited activities.

Community Need Addressed

Due to increased visitation of parks and public lands in New Hampshire, and the effects of increasingly severe storm damage and extreme weather events; today, more than ever, programs that protect at-risk ecosystems, increase environmental literacy, and prepare our youth to become the next generation of environmental stewards are critical to the future of our environment, workforce, and economy.

Position Outcomes

During the field season, all 21 members will be deployed on a series of 10 day hitches, in groups of 5 to 7 members, to various parks and public lands throughout the state where they camp and work on the land to complete critical conservation projects.
The completion of environmental stewardship projects on public lands will result in the protection of natural and recreational resources thus ensuring a sustainable long term presence of these resources for the benefit of the community.
During the education component of the program all 21 members will serve 4 days per week in one of 13 local elementary schools within the Manchester, Hooksett, and Allenstown New Hampshire school districts teaching environmental focused lessons in a classroom setting.
The completion of environmental education projects will result in the increased environmental knowledge, and ecological literacy of the students in the schools in which we serve.
