The PreserveWV AmeriCorps program is Preservation Alliance of West Virginia’s statewide service initiative to promote cultural heritage tourism and enhance historic resource re-use and redevelopment projects in West Virginia. The purpose of the Preserve WV AmeriCorps program is to implement historic preservation and heritage tourism projects throughout West Virginia by way of historic resource re-use, improvement, development, and interpretation. Members’ service will focus on economic development through historic resource improvement, nonprofit organizational capacity building, heritage tourism development, historic preservation, and environmental stewardship. Volunteer management and community engagement are other important facets of the program. Members are placed at individual sites across West Virginia to complete historic resource improvement activities and increase nonprofit capacity through community engagement. The Preserve WV AmeriCorps position includes both full-time and half-time positions.

Service Activities

Members will complete historic preservation and heritage tourism development projects. Example of activities include, but are not limited to, completing nominations for the National Register of Historic Places; organizing and participating in historic preservation projects; coordinating heritage tourism events; managing/recruiting/training volunteers; museum exhibit development; museum collection management; and conducting community development activities related to Main Street programs.

Community Need Addressed

The member will address issues related to blight and community development by utilizing historic preservation and heritage tourism.

Position Outcomes

Members will increase historic preservation and heritage tourism opportunities. Members will improve nonprofit capacity. Members will increase the use of historic resources in the Mountain State.
