The AmeriCorps member will assist the CIS site coordinator with the implementation of the CIS model at assigned school site. The member will provide mentoring and will also assist with recruitment of volunteers to help with the hunger prevention program, one on one tutoring , guest speakers at the school and mentors to assist students in areas such as reading and math.

Service Activities

Provide mentoring and supportive guidance for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, work with CIS site
coordinators, program manager, and Executive Director to ensure that appropriate data is being tracked and reported, assist with the
implementation of the CIS model at Flag View Intermediate School and Adobe Middle School, coordinate with CIS site staff to recruit
appropriate volunteers to meet site needs (ie. mentoring, tutoring and hunger prevention), assist with the planning and implementation
of a parent involvement program, support the mission of Communities in Schools of Nevada and the Elko County School District.
Participate in all appropriate CIS trainings, community outreach efforts and meetings, attend staffings and
general staff meetings, assist in the maintenance and inventory of materials.

Community Need Addressed

Flag View Intermediate School is ranked as a two star school in the state of Nevada, which means that there is room for improvement in
whole school proficiency and growth. 11% of the school population is classified as English learners. Adobe Middle School is ranked as
a three star school in the state of Nevada, which means they have had some success, but there is still need for improvement in whole
school proficiency and growth. 9% of the population is classified as English learners. An AmeriCorps member will serve at at Flag View
and at Adobe and will be valuable in providing added support for students in the classroom. It is anticipated that students who receive
one-on-one academic assistance will show increased academic engagement, increased mastery of academic subects and increased
school attendance. Attendance records will be monitored by the AmeriCorps members to look for attendance improvement and pre and
post test scores will be used to show improved academic performance.
