Description

The Urban Agriculture Program addresses community needs around environment and education in Southeast Nashville, with support of volunteers. Facilities include a five-acre urban farm and a greenhouse. Program Goals: 1) Helps volunteers grow gardening skills, learn about urban agriculture, and aids in providing nutritious food for others; 2) Supports S.T.E.M. curriculum of a local high school, through a collaborative partnership. The Urban Agriculture AmeriCorps Member will guide local high school students through a year-long, project-based learning experience as well as manage community volunteer opportunities at both HON’s five-acre Urban Farm and Greenhouse (located at Glencliff High School). The ideal candidate for this position is passionate about healthy food, is an organized self-starter, and feels confident leading groups.

Service activities include: leading volunteer projects; managing production at HON’s Urban Farm and Greenhouse; supporting the Academy of Environmental and Urban Planning at Glencliff High School; helping provide resources and support to a Glencliff High School senior capstone course; providing report data; identifying and countering pest/disease problems in the Urban Farm’s gardens and at the Greenhouse; maintaining Greenhouse operations, including: seeding, watering, harvesting, and cleaning; serving as liaison between HON, Glencliff High School, and other community partners.
