Elementary Literacy Tutor

An Elementary Literacy Tutor is placed at a partner elementary school to provide reading intervention and supplemental support through tutoring for children with dyslexia and its characteristics in Kindergarten through the upper elementary grades. The Elementary Literacy Tutor will use scripted and evidence-based literacy interventions as guided by his or her coach and ReadingCorps Program Staff and will conduct diagnostic screenings and progress assessments to ensure the student is on track to read at grade level.

Service Activities

Conduct one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions with students using curriculum and intervention resources provided by ReadingCorps.
Assist children to improve their reading skills and abilities to reach grade level expectations.
Provide opportunities for family literacy involvement for ReadingCorps students, including implementing semi-
annual community family literacy events at workshops at assigned service site.
Develop and maintain a weekly tutoring schedule for students to allow for approximately 21-25 children to
receive daily 30-minute reading tutoring sessions.
Identify students who qualify for tutoring services with direction from site supervisor and ReadingCorps program
staff based on ReadingCorps-adopted assessment and screening practices.
Act on feedback and coaching from site supervisor and ReadingCorps program staff.
Assess, with a high level of accuracy, students’ continual progress through progress monitoring and
benchmarking.
Document students’ attendance, progress, scores, and interventions using an online database system.
Regularly review student data with site supervisor and program staff to gauge the effectiveness of the literacy
intervention being used and determine if a change in strategy is necessary.

Community Need Addressed

It will ensure that children with dyslexic characteristics and literacy difficulties are reading on grade level by the third grade.

Position Outcomes

That all children in the counties we serve are reading on grade level by grade 3 and those individuals have been given the proper skills to be academically successful.
