Alternative Delivery Specialist

Girl scouts of Northeast Texas
No listings recruiting at this time

The AmeriCorps Alternative Delivery Specialist will assist GSNETX in the organization, scheduling, delivery, implementation and assessment of Girl Scout Academy programs to build courage, confidence, and character in girls in grades K-12 through in-class and after school programs in collaboration with local schools or nonprofit program partners.

Service Activities

AmeriCorps members will deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience in local schools and non-profit agencies.

Community Need Addressed

Research recently released by the Girl Scouts Research Institute, "The State of Girls 2017" indicate that more girls are living in poverty and low-income households today than 10 years ago. The reality is that lower-socioeconomic-status girls face overwhelming challenges every day -- challenges that affect their health, education and emotional well-being. In addition, they are less likely to participate in extracurricular activities. The stress of living in low SES communities often is accompanied by threats of violence or parental addiction -- factors that affect learning and self-image, making it even more difficult for at-risk girls to break through the barrier of intergenerational poverty.

AmeriCorps members will deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE), an evidence based program that helps girls cultivate important skills they need to take the lead in their own lives and the world. Through the GSLE, girls learn and grow in a safe, all-girl environment, discovering who they are, connecting with others, and taking action to make the world a better place. GSLE features a variety of fun, challenging, and experiential activities that empower girls as they develop leadership skills. AmeriCorps members will provide programming in these focus areas: STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics), Outdoor Leadership and within the Girl Scout Academy, an alternative delivery model in partnership with local schools and nonprofit partners.

Position Outcomes

3,000 low income girls will be served in the program and demonstrate improved academic engagement. Long term impact will be more female students with improved social/emotional skills and academic aspirations, who graduate high school and are better positioned for career success. More girls will choose STEM in their education and careers resulting in more women in the workforce with leadership and essential soft skills.
