The member will be serving directly with the host agency at the Clinch-Powell office in Rutledge. In addition to primary responsibilities (AmeriCorps), the member will engage in direct service in order to accomplish the daily tasks assigned by the site (Clinch-Powell). This position will be part-time (900 minimum hours of service), with the majority of service taking place during weekdays, but the position WILL require some weekend or weeknight service. Service will take place in a variety of settings, which may include the following: office, field work, interactions with clients in homes, booth/outreach at community events, outdoors, etc.

Service Activities

The majority of the member's activities will be "direct service" with the site. The primary responsibilities will include completing Appalachia CARES / AmeriCorps service-learning projects and meeting performance measures. Reports, timesheets, quarterly paperwork, etc. will be turned in directly to the program (Appalachia CARES) and are top priority over any site responsibilities. Daily site activities will vary somewhat depending on strengths and skills brought to the position by the applicant, but may include: office work (copying, filing, answering phones, office upkeep, organizing, assisting staff), client / community interaction (home visits, outreach, workshops), physical work (home construction /repair, painting, cleaning, etc.), and other tasks as the site sees fit. Secondary responsibilities may include capacity building for the organization (including programming, securing resources, etc.). All activities will be reviewed by the Appalachia CARES program before the placement is approved.

Community Need Addressed

The AmeriCorps position will address unmet housing and conservation needs in the community through service-learning, direct service and capacity building at the main office of Clinch-Powell. Community members will be engaged in projects and education designed, planned and implemented by the member.

Position Outcomes

Increase community knowledge and access to affordable, quality, safe housing options. Engage community members in projects and education (service-learning) leading to an increase in environmental awareness and decrease in environmental footprint. Help community members save money and conserve resources by reducing energy use in their homes.
