Summer Slide Prevention Program--Early Childhood Educator

AmeriCorps Members will lead activities with literacy and math concepts embedded, such as math games (counting, measuring) and book groups, so that participating youth remain intellectually engaged over the summer in a variety of themed enrichment opportunities.

Service Activities

AmeriCorps members serving with the Summer Slide Prevention Program will be responsible for:

--leading activities with literacy and math concepts embedded
--assisting with the implementation of other summer learning activities in conjunction with Club staff
--completing all reports and documentation, as required
--assisting with the development, acquisition, and maintenance of literacy materials
--helping to create, utilize, and maintain a print-rich literacy environment
--participating in required training and orientation
--participating in any programs, projects, or special events, as designated

Community Need Addressed

Research on summer learning loss provides evidence that the academic achievement of economically disadvantaged students slides back a few months every summer.

Position Outcomes

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee's Summer Slide Prevention Program will provide services to 60 youth, ages 7-9 years old, at three Boys & Girls Clubs locations, over a 10-week period, with AmeriCorps members leading activities that motivate and engage children while making math and reading fun
