Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee's mission is to inspire and empower all young people to realize their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. We offer after-school and summer programming for children ages 5 to 18. To help ensure all youth have the opportunity to participate, the Clubs charges only a $5 membership fee and no one is turned away because they cannot pay. Regardless of their circumstances, there is a place at the Clubs for every kid. Read More
Since 1911, thousands of young people have come to Camp Whitcomb/Mason for outdoor adventures, comradeship and the chance to learn in a fun and safe environment. A visit to Camp can be life-changing as our campers learn to become more independent and self-reliant. They embrace new challenges and forge new relationships with other youth and adults. Fears are faced and conquered at this unique year-round camp and conference center. While at Camp, participants experience a wide variety of outdoor and cooperative activities such as canoeing, swimming, star-gazing, nature hikes and activities, arts & crafts, a nutrition challenge and high ropes course and much more. Our campers get the chance to make new friends, discover an appreciation for nature and develop independence in a serene setting: ADVENTURE BASED LEARNING creates opportunities for campers to learn how to push themselves and take risks in a positive, encouraging way. The Challenge Course’s exercises promote leadership, team-building and problem-solving. THE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION curriculum promotes increased understanding of the natural world. Members learn animal and plant life, aquatics, outdoor survival and water conservation and sustainability skills. THE NATURE CENTER lets campers and visitors learn about and get an up-close look at animals that live in the wild
Offered at 11 MPS school sites, SPARK Early Literacy Program helps boost the literacy skills of more than 750 K4 through 3rd grade students annually. A recent evaluation of SPARK through an Investing in Innovations Grant showed a statistically significant and sizeable impact on its participants. The program operates during the school day in collaboration with the schools and classroom teachers. For K4 participants, SPARK tutors will come to the classrooms at specific times during the school day. At the K5 through 3rd grade levels, one-on-one tutoring sessions and individual lessons are developed for each student. The program also includes family engagement so parents and guardians have the tools they need to help their children be successful. SPARK hosts two all-SPARK events per year and monthly family events at each site to celebrate student achievement.
