The Kinder Academy Program targets Milwaukee children with no prior formal pre-school experience, who are unprepared for the basics of kindergarten.

AmeriCorps members will intentionally teach 'rising Kinders,' whom will be attending kindergarten in the following September, social and emotional skills, as well as basic concepts of numeracy (math) and early learning literacy skills.

Service Activities

AmeriCorps members will be assigned to a Boys & Girls Clubs location for the summer and will help facilitate the curriculum developed for "rising Kinders." This will be a 30 hour per week position, 5 days a week, 5-6 hours a day.

Members will:
--Complete all reports and documentation required.
--Assist in the development, acquisition, and maintenance of literacy materials.
--Establish and maintain a rapport with Club staff and parents.
--Help create, utilize, and maintain a print-rich literacy environment
--Participate in programs, projects, and special events.
--Participate in all required training and orientation.

Community Need Addressed

Numeracy and literacy helps children learn and succeed in school and leads to better jobs and wages that improve security for their families, which, in turn, reduces stress and strain on public services. The need for increased numeracy and literacy opportunities in the Milwaukee area is severe.

Position Outcomes

AmeriCorps Members will lead group activities for 16 rising kindergartners at two Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee locations, teaching basic skills and concepts needed to begin school in September, ready to learn.
