Environmental Education Coordinator

AmeriCorps members serving at Camp Whitcomb-Mason are responsible for:
--planning and implementation of educational and recreational curriculum and programs at Camp Whitcomb-Mason
--creating, implementing, and leading youth through environmental education lessons and activities in areas of: archaeology, agriculture, athletics, cultural studies, nature, arts & crafts, outdoor living skills, Wisconsin forest history, and organic farming
--serving as Lifeguards, Village Coordinators, Health Coordinators, Day Camp Counselors; among other positions*

Service Activities

AmeriCorps members will

--serve as the primary caregiver for each day camper
--develop educational and recreation programs
--assist with the direction, supervision, and organization of campers and/or staff in their group
--apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, and respond for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth
--be aware of and implement safety guidelines
--leading and assisting with the teaching of activities
--assist in program areas such as waterfront, nature, all camp activities, and arts & crafts, as directed
--set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship

Community Need Addressed

Lack of academic engagement of children during the summer, which often leads to students "sliding back" and losing progress made during the school year

--broader understanding of environmental education for program participants
-consistent engagement of Milwaukee youth in interactive and productive programming
