Language Development Tutor

As an English Language Tutor, you’ll be placed at a local school where you’ll help students in middle school to improve their academic English language skills and gain confidence. Every day, you’ll meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide extra practice and build skills.

Service Activities

What to Expect

- Use proven strategies to help Long-Term English Learner students build their skills and confidence.
- Collaborate with coaches and teachers to monitor student progress and see what’s working.
- Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data management software.
- Commit to continuous improvement through coaching, training and professional development.
- Lead after school enrichment classes focused on hands-on learning and social emotional development.
- Support families with engaging in their student’s learning at school.
- Represent Language Corps at school-sponsored activities and share your experience with the wider community to help build awareness.

Position Outcomes

In Minnesota public schools about 74,000 students (around 8.5%) are multilingual. Although fluent in English, multi-lingual students often need extra support with reading and writing. As part of Language Corps, AmeriCorps members are trained to mentor middle school students, ensure and help them improve their skills. Member provide individual, small group, and classroom support to help students realize their incredible potential.
