STEM Expert Tutor

Part-time AmeriCorps members will serve as after-school high school math and science tutors in Los Angeles at five College Track and Alliance College-Ready Public Schools sites. AmeriCorps members can earn a $4000 annual living stipend for part-time service and can earn a $3049.50 part-time education award after successfully completing their 900-hour service term.

Service Activities

AmeriCorps members will provide academic support by:

● Assisting high school teachers and College Track staff in identifying students who would benefit from afterschool math and science tutoring programs.
● Plan tutoring sessions and provide small-group and one-to-one math literacy and/or science literacy tutoring to high school youth
● Support student academic success by partnering with teachers and school staff to facilitate differentiated learning activities
● Create, support and/or co-lead science and/or math-focused events to enrich school science and or math culture and climate
● Create, support and/or co-lead events or programs recognizing and appreciating growth and/or achievement in science and/or math
● Record time spent with students providing small group and one-to-one tutoring in our data management system
● Participate in and/or lead facilitated data review and student progress monitoring meetings utilizing business intelligence tools per team schedule
● Promote a positive learning environment

Increase high school literacy achievement in math and science. Support high school students in Los Angeles to develop the skills and tools needed to pursue 21st Century industry-leading careers.

Position Outcomes

Increase real-world application skills along with proficiency in high school math and science. At the end of the first program year, the AmeriCorps members will be responsible for increasing students’ literacy in math and/or science subjects, as evidenced by a minimum of a 15% increase on ACT math and/or science assessment tests within one academic year.
