AmeriCorps Community Volunteer Coordinator

Reports to: Senior Director, Community Engagement

The Community Volunteer Coordinator will work individually and as part of a team of AmeriCorps members housed at four local high schools, at the United Way of Dane County Volunteer Center, and at the Morgridge Center for Public Service at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, to maximize and optimize the quantity and quality of tutoring at the schools. The Community Volunteer Coordinator will support this program by recruiting and placing community volunteers and area college students to be math tutors before, during, and after school at East, West and Memorial High Schools in Madison, and at Middleton High School. The Community Volunteer Coordinator will work closely with his or her AmeriCorps counterpart at the UW Morgridge Center, who will be overseeing campus recruitment. At the Volunteer Center, the Coordinator will organize training programs for volunteer managers and nonprofit board members and assist in engaging people in meaningful volunteer engagements.

Service Activities

Tutor Recruitment responsibilities:
• Create Achievement Connections tutor recruitment plan and work with program partners to carry out the plan.
• Organize and implement tutor trainings with Achievement Connections team.
• Actively promote volunteerism within the community by recruiting, screening and placing volunteer tutors who are interested in working with high school students in math.
• Assist the AmeriCorps Tutor Liaison(s) and district Tutor Coordinators with interviewing, screening and placing volunteers as needed and appropriate.
• Assist in the coordination and implementation of tutor trainings.

United Way Volunteer Center responsibilities:
• Coordinate 2-4 advanced training sessions for experienced volunteer managers.
• Assist with fall conference in conjunction with the Dane County Administrators of Volunteer services (DCAVS).
• Help coordinate and do follow-up for 6-part Volunteer Management Training Series.
• Coordinate volunteer management training for AmeriCorps team.
• Use social media to facilitate ongoing communication, continuous learning and sharing of best practices among volunteer managers.
• Be part of the United Way Volunteer Center/2-1-1 staff team.

AmeriCorps responsibilities:
• Attend and complete all AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, training, team meetings and National Service days.
• Wear approved AmeriCorps gear while performing AmeriCorps service activities or attending official events.
• Work with supervisor to develop and update a work plan for your service year.
• Complete all AmeriCorps service requirements in a timely and complete manner.
• Abide by all AmeriCorps service rules and service provisions.
• Complete all AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely and complete manner.

Community Need Addressed

The Community Volunteer Coordinator recruits members of the local community to join the Achievement Connections program as volunteer math tutors in four Madison-area high schools.

Position Outcomes

In partnership with the Campus Volunteer Coordinator, the Community Volunteer Coordinator will expand the program capacity and reach of the Achievement Connections program by recruiting 240 volunteers to serve as math tutors across four Madison-area high schools.
