How it works

A service year is an extraordinary year that transforms your life and your community. It’s not your typical path; it’s an experience for A Better You. A Greater Us.

Service years are available through a variety of service year programs in a wide array of issue areas, including: education, the environment, disaster relief, healthcare, and many more.

You’ve probably heard about some of the most popular service year programs — AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, Teach for America, Habitat for Humanity, YouthBuild, and City Year to name a few. There are hundreds of additional programs as well that host service year opportunities and are looking for diverse talent to help their organizations achieve their missions.

When you serve a year, you have the opportunity to work alongside people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, and perspectives and develop relationships that will last a lifetime. No matter where you are in your education or career, a service year is an incredible opportunity that allows you to shape your future and your community for years to come.

Whether you choose to do a service year right after high school, during or after college, or as a way to find your path, the way to finding and doing your ideal service year looks like this with the timing up to you!

Nuts & bolts of how it works

Finding a service year opportunity that is right for you can take some time, but here are three easy steps to help you find your way.

Tell Us

To find the best service year experience for you, we need you to tell us a little bit about your background, education, interests and when you are available to do a service year. This information will not only help us match you with service year opportunities that seem like a good fit, but it will also help you stand out from the crowd to organizations. Remember, organizations are actively looking for candidates like you — so make sure your profile is complete and polished! And, don’t hesitate to brag a little.

Match

Once your profile is ready to go, start searching for service year opportunities that interest you. You can always update the issue areas you are interested in, where you want to serve, or if your availability changes.
You will be matched to service year experiences that fit your education level and interests — check them out under “My Matches.”

Connect

See a service year listing you like? You can tell the organization “I’m interested”, and they’ll get a notification about your interest in their service year position.
Some organizations will respond and let you know they think you are a good match. You’ll see these responses in your “My Dashboard” under “My Matches”.
