American YouthWorks (AYW) is a national leader, combining green building and workforce training with affordable housing, IT, health care & education. Our YouthBuild Program works with unemployed youth who are not in school, ages 16-24, to complete their GED or HSD, combined with hands-on job training and personal development. As an Public Health AmeriCorps member in our program, you will a take leadership role in the Health Corps service site. This role will assist and monitor members, facilitate service projects, and assist in teaching certifications provided.

Service Activities

Public Health AmeriCorps(PHA) members will be serving with YouthBuild Austin, a program of American YouthWorks. PHA members will be serving in a full-time capacity (1700 hours). Full-time members are approved to serve in educational settings (e.g. schools, community centers, etc.) within the Austin community, as Community Health Workers. AmeriCorps members will receive training (120 hour course) to become certified as a Community Health Worker, if not certified already, and will lead, facilitate, and participate in the expansion of services to communities in need of greater health equity by providing health education, local outreach & improving access to health resources. PHA members will assist staff working in education based public health programs to serve families and improve their social determinants of health. PHAs will also engage in classrooms to facilitate guiding clients towards successful enrollment in programs structured to improve their quality of life.

We offer case management services for all participants, which includes assistance with support services, emergency assistance, and counseling. We have a Transition Team to assist members with post-program planning, employment/training opportunities, and post-secondary education.
