The Harborview Elementary School community is growing in its capacity to provide trauma-informed social and emotional support for children. Via our three-year collaboration with Washington State University’s Collaborative Learning for Educational Achievement and Resilience (CLEAR), Harborview seeks a child-friendly, active learner and innovator who can help us to design, structure and innovate two programs: PlayWorks, a recess program for inclusive, cooperative games, and a “Regulation Room” with daily goal-setting check-ins for students struggling with self-control and regulation. The Coach will collaborate regularly with certified staff, and will be a regular contributing member in all trauma-informed professional development via CLEAR.

Service Activities

Playworks Functions:
● Research and learn the components, philosophy and game structures of Playworks via resources at Harborview, meetings with existing staff, online study, and possibly school visits.
● Collaborate with the P.E. teacher, school counselor, and principal to implement cooperative recess games.
● Recruit and train student volunteers to mentor fellow students and monitor games.
● Assist in after-school and summer implementation of Playworks games and techniques in site-based after school and summer programming.

Regulation Room Functions
● In consultation with school counselor and CLEAR consultant, take the lead on the design of a “Regulation Room, ” a drop-in space for coaching students who need assistance with re-gaining self-control or learning-readiness during the course of a day.
● In consultation with school counselor and CLEAR consultant, provide daily pro-active coaching for students who regularly utilize the Regulation Room.
● Communicate as needed with classroom teachers, counselor, school nurse, and families in order to support students’ growth in self-regulation and social skills.

Marginal Functions of Position
● Assist in the development of service-related tasks for students across the elementary school.
● Keep data on the effectiveness of Playworks and the Regulation Room.

Position Outcomes

The Harborview AmeriCorps Playworks Social and Emotional Resilience coach will collaborate with Harborview staff, leadership, and Washington State University consultants to design and implement a program to build resilience in students. The program will assist our highest needs students through prevention and intervention when emotional dysregulation or behavioral problems interfere with learning. Working closely with certified staff, the Resilience Coach will provide guidance to increase pro-social skills in collaborative work and play.
