Each organization will receive the support of the member based on the organization’s needs, and the member’s skill-set, so in many ways this program is tailored to fit specific needs of differing organizations with the talent pool of the service members. That said, it must be remembered that members serve in a specific capacity, to advance the program goals of the Flint Urban Safety and Health Corps program, and are not available to assist with the general operations of an organization. Members will each have an approved service position description.

Community Need Addressed

The Flint Water Crisis looms large in our community, and in its aftermath many Flint citizens remain wary of government, their trust shaken by public utilities, and, in many cases, grappling with the continuing, or unknown physical, emotional, and psychological effects of drinking water. These effects are lasting, and it will take a concerted effort to overcome what are often debilitating residual consequences. The Flint Urban Safety and Health Corps has been formed to assist residents in five major areas of concern: food security and nutrition, medical management, early education, crime prevention, behavioral and developmental health.

Position Outcomes

Flint Urban Safety and Health Corps AmeriCorps members serve, through host sites, residents affected by the water crisis to assist them in key areas of recovery. Those areas are: 1. Food security and nutrition; 2. Behavioral and Developmental Health; 3. Early Education; 4. Medical Management and ; 5. Crime prevention. Members serve in conjunction with community organizations including community development corporations, local nonprofits, church organizations, education outreach centers, health clinics, and literacy centers. In addition, members are responsible for planning and executing a number of both small and large-scale events that support and further the Program’s mission; these events will be designed in conjunction with the host site, the member, and the Program Manager. Members will present on all program areas covered under the Flint Urban Safety and Health Corps (FUSHC) umbrella.
