The VISTA member will work to improve public health for Maniilaq Association clients which include all of the communities in the Northwest Arctic Borough and the community of Point Hope through improving access to traditional foods, affecting regulatory changes, and improving indoor air quality.
Maniilaq is a regional 501(C)3 non-profit providing health and social services to 8,000 people within the Northwest Arctic Borough and Point Hope. Maniilaq operates a hospital in Kotzebue, as well as clinics in each of the 12 villages in its service area. Services include specialty medical care, community health services, construction and maintenance of water and sanitation facilities, training and educational support, and a host of other services including environmental health. Currently, the Sigluaq is a unique food donation center that provides traditional foods for Maniiilaq Health Center Long Term Care Center elders and for community events. The VISTA will serve to improve processes of the Sigluaq especially processes that comply with USDA and ADEC food handling and preparation requirements. The VISTA member will help coordinate the seal oil task force that is working to make the preparation and storage of seal oil safer for the end consumers. The VISTA member will also design a naturally occurring asbestos monitoring program, and a community education campaign designed to mitigate the negative consequences of asbestos exposure by increasing awareness of risks at a community level. **BENEFITS: Monthly stipend ($1,333), for service members relocating more than 50 miles (34 cents/mile up to $1,000) and settling in allowance ($550), health benefits, child care assistance, and Education Award ($5,920) or cash stipend ($1,500). VISTA will attend/present at trainings hosted at partner non profits, attending professional conferences, rural travel, professional networking in public health and environmental engineering fields.
