Description

Be a part of a great team in a small community near Denali National Park, the Kenai Peninsula and Hatcher Pass SRA!

The AmeriCorps Member will work collaboratively with staff and the student body to provide value added services to the school and students to enhance learning.

Develop and implement tutoring program to foster and engender student success at the school. Most HHS students ride the bus to and from school with one-way distances reaching 40 miles. As such after school transportation is very limited for our student body. The AmeriCorps program will benefit the HHS community by providing tutoring and mentoring support for our students at school during the school day, thus allowing our students to take advantage of additional support regardless of their financial/transportation constraints. The AmeriCorps Member would utilize the provided classroom as a tutoring and support space that is welcoming and inviting for students. The AmeriCorps Member will also engage students in positive skill building activities, in school, after school and out of school.

The program will purposefully integrate the soft skills (employability) students need to be successful beyond high school with the academic skills. The additional skills are in the categories of self=management, work ethic and leadership, thinking and risk taking, and social/collaborative learning. The teachers will be proving weekly lessons in these areas and implementing strategies to assess growth toward measurable goals. The teams of teachers will meet bi-weekly to assess and adjust based on feedback. Our students who are typically underserved will need additional support in working toward the soft skill and academic goals.

We want graduates with the skills to be successful in life. BENEFITS: Monthly stipend ($1,550 ), airfare to Alaska, health insurance, child care assistance, and Education Award ($5,920)
