Rural Action is a membership based non-profit organization working on sustainable, asset-based community development. Our mission is to build a more just economy by developing the region’s assets in environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable ways. Rural Action believes every individual can make a difference in their community. Our core work centers on:

--Helping small communities do big things
--Growing local businesses and jobs
--Restoring our environment
--Cultivating the next generation of leaders

We do this work by focusing on sectors identified as important by our members: food and agriculture, forestry, zero waste and recycling, environmental education, watershed restoration, and energy.

  • About Us
Although chartered for all 32 counties in the Appalachian Ohio region, Rural Action’s home office is based in northern Athens County. Its members and projects are concentrated in Athens and the six counties surrounding it: Meigs, Vinton, Washington, Hocking, Morgan, and Perry. We also work in Tuscarawas, Stark, and Carroll County.
  • Our Impact
Our AmeriCorps members are bringing life back to creeks that were polluted to the point they were called dead. They are preventing waste from piling up in our landfills, teaching local landowners how to build a sustainable living from traditional forest crops and healthy produce, sharing our unique environmental assets with youth and community members, enriching classroom experiences for our struggling schools, and tackling childhood obesity issues through access, education, and shared resources.

Rural Action Programs

Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps

The Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps (AORC) mobilizes nearly 75 AmeriCorps members to help educate youth and the public, restore, conserve, and preserve environmental resources, improve food distribution to people in poverty, support reduced waste and recycling initiatives, and support economic resilience through climate mitigation and sustainability projects.

Rural Renewal AmeriCorps VISTA Program

Rural Action host 5 AmeriCorps VISTA members in Appalachian Ohio. VISTA members dig at the roots of poverty and inequality. In our region, that looks like supporting farmers and forest farmers, increasing access to healthy foods, building job opportunities and economy around green energy, and working with rural homeless populations. VISTAs serve a 1-year term of service, supported by a living allowance, healthcare, childcare assistance, and an education award or cash award at the end of service. VISTAs also receive non-competitive status for Federal jobs for 1 year after service a full term.
