VISTA Youth Curriculum Coordinator

The VISTA Youth Curriculum Coordinator will serve alongside one other VISTA member to implement a youth workforce development (YWD) program that provides participants with job training as part of RTNO’s approach to alleviating poverty among multiple generations in New Orleans. Focussing on curriculum research and design, program implementation, and volunteer educator recruitment, the Youth Curriculum Coordinator is a vital piece in implementing a YWD program at RTNO. This member will work closely with the Director and the Volunteer and AmeriCorps Manger to improve the curriculum of previous YWD programs, create data tracking systems for program participants and alumni, and engage youth in the program through implementation.

Service Activities

-Coordinate with Construction Managers to develop a comprehensive construction training curriculum involving a wide range of skills for program participants
- Coordinate with the Volunteer and AmeriCorps Manager to revise current YWD professional development program based on previous program feedback from participants and other staff members
-Research and create activities and workshops for participants to engage in during the program that incorporate team building, workplace etiquette, financial literacy, professional development, and more to create a well-rounded program.
-Work with the Director to meet and engage current RTNO sponsors and supporters in the YWD program by inviting them to become guest speakers and presenters for youths.
-Work with the Director to identify potential employer matches for the youths that include current and potential RTNO partner organization and corporations.
-Work with the VISTA Youth Development Coordinator to host, organize, and attend job fairs and other post-program employment opportunities to benefit program participants.
-Create a staff training manual including activities, schedules, and other pertinent information to upcoming cohorts for the YWD program
-Create and maintain an accurate database of YWD program participants that be contacted for future volunteer opportunities and post-program data collection
-Work with the VISTA Youth Development Coordinator to create and collect pre-and post-program surveys that evaluate participant progress for future program improvement.

Community Need Addressed

New Orleans has the third largest number of opportunity youth in the country and needs workforce development and job training programs to help these youths obtain jobs with higher wages, allowing them to combat the affordable housing crisis and dramatically increasing cost of living in the city.

Position Outcomes

Demonstrated change in knowledge amongst youth program participants in professional development, financial literacy, and construction skills. Increased number in community sponsors and volunteer educators. Increase in financial and in-kind donations to support the youth workforce development program at RTNO.
