AmeriCorps Member Resident Teacher

Members enroll in Relay Graduate School of Education's Master of Arts in Teaching degree program concurrently with two years of service in schools. In Year 1, they serve as teachers in residence, working full-time in classrooms alongside a master teacher while developing their own instructional skills. In Year 2, members become teachers of record of their own classroom, while continuing to work toward completing their MAT degree. This position is an AmeriCorps full-time, professional corps member position.

Service Activities

Members spend five days per week in the classroom implementing high-impact teaching strategies with students. As they practice teaching methods in real time with students, members make significant and unique contributions to schools including: providing differentiated instruction by tutoring individuals or small groups of students; aiding their advisor during whole-class lessons; counseling individuals or small groups of students; communicating with students and their parents, and coordinating projects with school volunteers. Members are also expected to run extracurricular activities that would not otherwise exist, such as sports and clubs that enrich K-12 students’ school experience.
