Description
Fourteen full-time AmeriCorps members will take part in a comprehensive and consolidated approach to serving underserved populations across Beaufort County. The program will be administered by Pamlico Rose Institute (PRI) located in Washington, NC. PRI Health Corps will develop and maintain wellness gardens with related aims of harvesting and distributing fresh vegetables, while teaching under-resourced adults and youth the fundamentals of healthy living. Project outcomes include a positive change in behavior toward wellness and exposure to the benefit of gardening as a life skill. This program will also expose Health Corps and service recipients to public health networks of care and career opportunities. Pamlico Rose Institute is a 501(c)3, that provides wellness, healthy living and resilience programs for women Veterans in eastern NC.
Depending on season, garden activities will vary and include construction, preparation, planting, garden maintaining, and harvesting and distributing garden produce.
In addition, activities include bed preparation, planting, weeding, mulching, watering, pruning and general garden cleanup. PRI Health Corps members will help develop and be actively involved in promoting a formal and informal healthy living and eating program.

Those members serving 1700 hours in a service year will be eligible for a Siegal Educational Award. Those members serving 900 hours in a service year will be eligible for a partial Siegal Educational Award.
