Position

Elev8 Academic Tutor

Safe Passages
No listings recruiting at this time

The need for academic and social/emotional support is more significant than ever from the learning loss and social isolation while schools were in remote learning during the pandemic. Elev8 Academic Tutors are placed at a K-12 school in Oakland, Union City, or Emeryville to tutor and mentor a cohort of 5 to 10 students. Members will participate in an extensive orientation before starting at their school site and will continue to receive ongoing professional development and support throughout the service year from a dedicated coach. Coaches will help members identify students at their school site who will most benefit from individual and small group tutoring.

Service Activities

Day Time Intervention:
During the school day members will provide targeted academic support to students in small group and one-on-one instruction. Members will have opportunities to build relationships with teachers and school administrators, and collaborate with other members in developing strategies to best support students.

After School Program:
During the Elev8 After School program members continue to work with students at their school site and implement daily curriculum, including academic content, social-emotional learning opportunities, and enrichment activities. Members also build and maintain a safe and supportive learning environment, while engaging families and the community.

Orientation and Ongoing Training:
Members participate in a variety of professional development trainings and service events throughout the year. Safe Passages staff are experienced educators and provide ongoing support to help guide members in selecting appropriate activities and lessons.

Community Need Addressed

Safe Passages AmeriCorps members serve at K-12 schools in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods where students, particularly students of color, are more likely to experience low academic achievement, high dropout rates, and high levels of involvement with the juvenile justice system. COVID 19 has increased the health, economic, and education disparities in these neighborhoods due to high levels of learning loss during shelter-in-place periods and social emotional development loss from 18 months of limited social interaction for children and youth. Members will help students make up learning loss with individualized tutoring and support, as well help students transition back to in-person learning with social/emotional support and mentoring.
