The Iowa Afterschool Alliance seeks to develop strong statewide systems of support for high-quality, affordable, and accessible before school, after school, and summer programs.

  • About Us
The Iowa Afterschool Alliance is a network of nearly 1000 individuals and organizations that support the vision that all Iowa children and youth have access to high quality afterschool and summer learning opportunities in their community. With a professional staff based in West Des Moines, Iowa, and a statewide Strategic Leadership Team, the Iowa Afterschool Alliance has the power to impact access to programming in our state through a shared voice, implementation of best practices, and expansion of investments in high quality programming.
  • Our Impact
The Iowa Afterschool Alliance develops policies and partnerships that build capacity at the state and local levels for high-quality out-of-school time programming; connects local providers with the resources and tools necessary to provide high-quality out-of-school time programming; and communicates critical data on the need and impact of out-of-school time programming to the public, partners, and other vital stakeholders.

The Iowa Afterschool Alliance Programs

Summer Ladders AmeriCorps Program

The Summer Ladders program directly impacts the phenomenon known as the “summer slide,” as well as income-based achievement gaps. Research on the summer slide has indicated that some youth lose over a month’s worth of school-year learning over the summer. What’s more, studies have concluded “that income-based reading gaps grew over the summer, given that middle class students tended to show improvement in reading skills while lower-income students tended to experience loss .” AmeriCorps members serve at diverse host sites across the state of Iowa to develop and facilitate high quality activities to mitigate the impacts of the summer slide.
