After School Enrichment Aide

Afterschool Enrichment Aide members will serve directly with students in existing community-based After School programs. Members will implement literacy-based enrichment activities under the direction of host-site supervisors.

Service term: Monday, October 7, 2019 –through Friday, May 15, 2020
AmeriCorps members will complete a minimum of 300 hours during the service term.
Living allowance of $2500 and Education Award of $1289 available upon successful completion of the service term.
Sick time, vacation time and holidays are not counted toward required service hours.
Members may not spend more than 20 percent of their service hours receiving education or training and no more than 10 percent of their service performing fundraising activities.
Members will serve approximately 10 hours per week. Anticipated service hours are 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays as required by host site.
Members will attend day-long trainings as required by the program and complete all program evaluation requirements such as: Member Experience Survey and End of Term Evaluation.

Service Activities

After School Enrichment Aides will serve directly with children in after-school programs under the direction of Host Site Supervisor and Host Site Staff, this may include:
1. Supplemental supervision of children
2. Setting up, (co)leading, and managing small and large group literacy-based education and/or enrichment activities;
3. Providing one-on-one time helping youngsters improve reading skills and assisting with homework;
4. Facilitating single and group literacy-based activities;
5. Conducting literacy-based play activities with children, such as running, kneeling, squatting, sitting on the ground, bending and jumping;
6. Monitoring and ensuring the safety and overall well-being of program participants.

Community Need Addressed

Improving literacy skills of elementary age children in the Grinnell-Newburg Community School District.

Position Outcomes

Research shows that proficiency in reading allows students to shift from learning to read to reading to learn and to master the more complex subject matter they encounter as they progress in school. Most students who fail to reach this critical milestone falter in the later grades and may drop out before earning a high school diploma. Literacy skill development is the key to success in life.
