Jonathan frames the GO Fellowship as invaluable. “The unique style that Great Oaks brings is mainly through the Fellowship Program.” The Fellowship program brings about diversity to the schools. Most importantly through the many sports and activities that have been introduced over time.

With the presence of Fellows in the classroom, Amanda feels heard and thanks the GO Fellows for being attentive. GO Fellows work closely with their students which is different from the relationship that students have with their teachers. The Fellows allow their students to feel confident and welcome throughout the school year.

“I have always been passionate about learning and encouraging others to find the joy of being a lifelong learner. Not only has this opportunity been rewarding for me, I know I have encouraged and inspired growth in my students as well. I started working with kids when I was in middle school and now, more than a decade later, I am here getting the chance to make a difference in the lives of middle schoolers.”

“I made my decision to dedicate a year of service at Great Oaks because I saw a chance to give back to a community in which I had greatly benefitted from. I was blessed by having educators invest their time towards not only my academic growth, but also my personal growth. This helped me take more accountability for my own life decisions, and understand the world beyond academics. This year, I've had instances to return the favor with my own life experiences to help expand our students' growth.”

“I joined the GO Fellowship to contribute to a trauma-informed safe space and support system.As a young girl, I often felt alone. My mother worked sixty hour weeks, whilst barely taking care of herself. I was riddled with guilt and shame. My escape, however, was education and literature. I wanted students to fall in love with education too and its wondrous escape.Therefore, I joined the GO Fellowship to encourage our students to tell their stories. They matter and their voice matters.”

“The best part of coming into the office each day is taking the time to bond with my homeroom during morning advisory. We typically use this time to share stories about the previous day and have a lot of laughs!”
