Community Need Addressed

Like many larger urban regions in the U.S., the history of the city of Stockton has been a tale of two cities: a city of stark contrast and disparate outcomes. Areas of Stockton, specifically the neighborhoods that house the seven schools that Support Specialists will be working in, were disinvested in the 1930s by redlining practices. Almost a century later, the result of this is reflected in GIS mapping of practically every social determinant of health; educational attainment, crime rates, and indicators of economic prosperity - maps that mirror those faded red map lines of the past. Vast disparities in services and opportunities for youth manifest in high rates of violent crime within the service area, increasing the need for access to mental health and trauma services for youth and families.

FFSJ’s STRC will expand their Healing Schools Initiative to address the growing need of youth and their families within Stockton Unified School District (SUSD). Several SUSD students have experienced complex, recurring trauma and exhibit behaviors maladaptive to their environment as evidenced by chronic absenteeism, poor interpersonal relationships, deleterious impulsive behaviors, premature exposure to community violence, lack of support, and substance use. FFSJ will extend existing culturally-rooted, trauma-informed services to identified South Stockton schools.
