Full-time for 12 months (Begins August 2018)
Pay: total living stipend of $13,732 (distributed biweekly)
Location: Grand Rapids and Wyoming area
The Literacy Center of West Michigan is seeking a passionate, community-oriented, bilingual (English/Spanish) individual to support adult learners in the Family Literacy Program. This individual will serve as an advocate for learners as they attend weekly English language classes and learn how to support their children’s educational development. Additionally, this individual will aid in intakes and assessments and monitor attendance. The ideal candidates for this full-time position will be detailed-oriented, passionate about building relationships and strengthening communities, autonomous, and have excellent written and spoken control of English and Spanish. This position requires the selected candidates to be screened and approved through the national AmeriCorps program.

Position Overview:

Learner Recruitment and Support
- Assist in planning and facilitating recruitment events, including learner orientations
- Attend school functions to recruit learners and promote the Family Literacy Program
- Serve as first and continuous point of contact for learners
- Follow up with learners regarding attendance issues and barriers to access
- In collaboration with Family Literacy Program instructors, plan and execute reminder calls and mailings to promote regular attendance

Data Collection and Management
- Manage intake process for new and returning learners
- Support instructors in completing learner assessments
- Manage learner data including attendance, learner demographics and assessments
- Ensure integrity of data

Collaboration:
- Work closely with instructors to identify and meet learner needs
- Publicize the Literacy Center of West Michigan in the community
- Attend AmeriCorps and Family Literacy Program team meetings
- Participate in periodic AmeriCorps events to promote civic engagement
- Collaboratively plan service project events for National Days of Service


English Language Learner Tutoring:
- Prepare individualized lesson plans and tutor 2-3 learners one-on-one, weekly

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook email and calendar
- Knowledge of data management practices preferred
- High level of control in both English and Spanish, written and spoken
- Strong relationship-building and customer service skills to develop rapport with learners and build relationships with program partners
- Interest in family and children’s literacy issues
- Ability to meet weekly and monthly deadlines
- Ability to collaborate with coworkers in close environment, yet able to display independent decision-making
- Must have a valid driver’s license and personal transportation
- Schedule flexibility for required day, occasional evening, and occasional weekend responsibilities

AmeriCorps Requirements and Benefits:
- Must pass local, state, and national FBI background and sex offender registry check
- Must be U.S. citizens, national, or legal permanent residents of the United States
- Full-time (35-40 hours per week) with little time off during required service period
- Day & evening hours necessary, with some weekend hours required
- An Education Award of $5,920 will be available at the end of service period to members who fulfill service-hour requirements
- Basic health insurance, childcare benefits, and loan forbearance may be provided for those who qualify

Additional Benefits

The AmeriCorps member will receive a total living stipend of $13,732. Upon successful completion of the service year, the member will receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,920. Training will be provided during the first week of service. Periodic trainings will also be offered throughout the service year. AmeriCorps members may be eligible to count college or graduate level coursework as service hours.
