Background: Edu-Futuro is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, in the Northern Virginia area, founded in 1998. It has the primary goal of assisting both immigrant students and their parents in a “two-generation” approach to fulfil its mission of empowering immigrant and underserved youth and families through mentorship, education, leadership development, parent engagement, and workforce development. Edu-Futuro has many programs targeting high school students in the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP I, II, & III), to prepare them for future educational prospects. Parents are assisted via workshops that inform them of the value of having their children graduate from high school and seek post-secondary education. Adults are also empowered through digital literacy, parent engagement, and workforce development workshops. Edu-Futuro is experiencing continuous growth, with more and more beneficiaries each year, where organizational capacity-building is required. VISTAs will serve Edu-Futuro in fulfilling its mission and, as a result, end the cycle of poverty among low-income immigrant and Latino families through their service in: Fundraising, Curriculum Support, Paralegal Research, and Workforce Development. The VISTA Project Leader will assist in recruiting community members to join these life-changing training programs; and develop strategic plans to ensure that the foundation to launch a Childcare Education and Training Center during Fiscal year 2025 is properly established to secure long-term sustainability for Edu-Futuro.

Goal of the Project: The goal of this project is to build capacity within Edu-Futuro by supporting our existing programming for students, parents, and adult learners.

Focus Area(s)

Primary: Lead, coordinate, and support our VISTA members to build the internal capacity needed to strengthen and continue Edu-Futuro’s educational programming to reach more beneficiaries in the low-income immigrant and Latino communities.

Secondary: Build capacity to launch a Childcare Education and Training Center in Fiscal Year 2025. This center will act as a “one-stop shop” in tackling poverty in the low-income immigrant and Latino community via education and workforce development training.

VISTA Assignment Objectives and Member Activities

Service Activities/Member Duties

Coordination

● Coordinate and track performance of VISTA members during their term of service.

● Weekly check-ins and talks to ensure they are being supported and have a resource to turn to for guidance.

● Coordinate with Edu-Futuro’s supervisor to ensure projects and tasks of members are being accomplished and have the support required.

Community awareness and engagement

● Assist Management in preparing for meeting with potential collaborators and formalizing

partnerships via Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

Outreach

● Performance measurement

● Program development and delivery

● Technology use

● Volunteer recruitment and management system

● Other

Leave Policy:

● Parental: For birth or adoption, use personal and medical leave first. The AmeriCorps Regional Office may approve an additional 10 days, for a total of 30 days, if required by your medical professional.

● Emergency: Up to 5 additional leave days may be granted if natural disaster requires leaving the site or an immediate family member becomes critically ill or dies. The sponsor must approve and notify the AmeriCorps Regional Office.

● Extended Medical Leave: Up to 5 additional medical leave days (for up to a total of 15 medical workdays in a full year of service) may be granted by the regional office for situations that require extended recuperation.

● Military: As required by the military

● Jury Duty: As necessary

Minimum Experience Requirements:

● Bachelor’s Degree

● Successfully completed at least one term of full-time AmeriCorps service

with VISTA (365 days), NCCC (1,700 hours), or State and National (1,700 hours), or a full term with the Peace Corps.

● Prior experience and/or interest in project management and/or business administration, grant writing, education, and legal research

● Background in grant writing/fundraising, education/curriculum design, and pre law/paralegal work

● Be in a position to offer full-time service for one to two years (365 days) without regard to regular working hours. (1700 hours; ca. 36 hours/week)

● Be willing to undergo a criminal history check.

● Hold one of the following citizenship/legal residency statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Alien, and persons legally residing in a state that have any of the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals

● Some evenings and occasional Saturdays

● Passionate about teaching and serving the immigrant community.

● Access to a motor vehicle to move from Edu-Futuro’s Northern Virginia offices.

Preferred Experience Requirements:

● Bilingual/bicultural, especially with knowledge of Spanish

● Experience designing and planning the adult and child programming we will provide at the CETC

● Experience recruiting community members to join life-changing training programs

● Experience developing strategic plans to ensure a newly-implemented program can be sustainable for the long-term.

● Some experience working with immigrants

● Familiarity with the Northern Virginia region, particularly Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William Counties and the City of Alexandria.
